Giovanni Soldini and Maserati’s crew crossed the Golden Gate at 18:31 GMT (10:31 local time) establishing the new world record of the route New York – San Francisco.

Born in 1908, attended the Naval Academy from 1923 till 1927. In 1940 he was the commander of submarine Manara first and later of submarine Cappellini that was driven out of the Mediterranean Sea through the Gibraltar strait and operated in the Atlantic Ocean from Betasom, the Italian base in Bordeaux.

He becomes famous all over the world because on October 15^th, 1940 he sank the Kabalo, a Belgian trading vessel operating under British flag  but, on his own risk, he rescued the 26 crew members towing the lifeboat four days long and later keeping them on the board till Azores. Despite the official reprimand of Admiral Dönitz, commander of the joint submarine operation, he sank British vessel Shakespeare and again he rescued again the wrecked crew.

At the end of 1941 he was able to reach Bordeaux despite the heavy damages due to the British attacks: the submarine remained blocked for repairs several months and he moved to the Decima MAS, the Italian Navy Special Forces, organizing all the operations on Black Seas and the Sevastopol  block.

In 1942  his new challenge was organize a similar strategy along the Libyan and Egyptian coasts with coordinated attacks from seas with fast boats starting from fishing boats.

On December 14^th, 1942, coming back from a mission directed to Bona, the fishing boat Cefalo was attacked by a British Spitfire. Salvatore Todaro was hit by shrapnel to the head and died instantly: he was 34 years old. His memory was honored with the Gold Medal in addition to the previous 3 Silver medals, 2 Bronze and 2 Gernan iron crosses.

After 70 years a ceremony held yesterday in Livorno keeps his memory alive.

Il Comandate Salvatore Todaro,  stimato per la sua umanità dai suoi uomini ed addirittura dai suoi nemici, era anche noto come il Gentiluomo dei mari oppure il Don Chisciotte dei mari.

Nato nel 1908, frequentva l’Accademia Navale dal 1923 al 1927. Nel 1940 riceve prima il comando del sommergibile Manara e poi quello del sommergibile Cappellini che guida fuori dal Mediterraneo attraverso lo Stretto di Gibilterra per operare in Atlantico da Betasom, la base Italiana a Bordeaux.

Divenne famoso in tutto il mondo in 15 Ottobre 1940 quando, dopo aver affondato il Kabalo, cargo Belga battente bandiera Inglese, trasse in salvo i 23 naufraghi e li rimorchiò a proprio rischio e pericolo fino alle Azzorre. Nonostante il richiamo ufficiale da parte dell’Ammiraglio Karl Dönitz, comandante in capo delle operazioni sottomarine congiunte, di nuovo trasse in salvo l’equipaggio della nave inglese Shakespeare dopo averla affondata.

Alla fine del 1941 riuscì a rientrare a Bordeaux nonostante i gravi danni riportati in seguito agli attacchi inglesi: il sommergibile resto fermo parecchi mesi per le riparazioni e lui chiese il trasferimento alla Decima MAS, il reparto per le operazioni speciali della Regia Marina, dove organizzò le operazioni sul Mar Nero per il blocco di Sebastopoli.

Nel 1942 la sua nuova sfida fu quella replicare una strategia analoga lungo le coste libiche ed egiziane con una serie di attacchi coordinati da parte di mezzi veloci rilasciati da pescherecci.

Il 14 Dicembre 1942, al rientro da un attacco al porto di Bona, il peschereccio Cefalo venne attaccato da uno Spitfire inglese. Salvatore Todaro fu colpito da una scheggia alla testa e morì immediatamente: aveva 34 anni. Alla sua memoria fu conferita la medaglia d’oro al Valor Militare che si aggiunge a 3 medaglie d’argento, 2 di bronzo e due Croci di ferro tedesche.

Ieri a Livorno, a 70 anni dalla sua scomparsa, una piccola cerimonia mantiene viva la sua memoria.

L’acquerello fu donato il 10 Aprile 2010 al Secondo Ufficiale del sommergibile S526 Salvatore Todaro e da allora, appeso nel quadrato ufficiali, naviga per tutti i mari del mondo ma soprattutto nelle loro profondità.

On April 10th, 2010 Lady Lazer_one gave the Second Officer of the Italian Submarine  S526 Salvatore  Todaro as a present  one of her watercolor and since that day it will be hosted inside the submarine sailing  across the seven seas and even under the sea-level.

Il Roma fu la terza unità della classe di navi da battaglia Littorio. Consegnata alla Regia Marina il 14 giugno 1942, venne danneggiato nel corso del bombardamento aereo statunitense del 13 Giugno 1043 mentre era alla fonda a La Spezia. Dopo le dovute riparazioni effettuate a Genova ritornò operativo il soltanto il 13 agosto 1943 diventando la nave ammiraglia di un grosso gruppo da battaglia al comando dell’Ammiraglio Carlo Bergamini. Fu affondato il 9 Settembre 1943 alle Bocche di Bonifacio mentre il gruppo si dirigeva verso Malta secondo le clausole dell’armistizio. Il suo relitto è stato ritrovato lo scorso 17 giugno 2012 dopo anni di ricerca. Ecco il profilo disegnato da Enrr.

Nel Golfo dell’Asinara è stata finalmente identificata una parte del relitto della Corazzata Roma adagiata a circa 1000 metri di profondità ed a circa 16 miglia dalla costa sarda . Le prime ed esclusive immagini del relitto sono state riprese dall’ Ingegner Guido Gay titolare della società Gaymarine S.r.l. che da molti anni conduce in zona sperimentazioni di innovative apparecchiature di esplorazione subacquea da lui ideate e costruite. Grazie all’ausilio di un sofisticato robot subacqueo Pluto Palla, e ad altri esclusivi strumenti imbarcati a bordo del catamarano Daedalus di proprietà dello stesso ingegnere, il sito dove giace il relitto della Corazzata Roma è stato individuato e visitato.

In the Gulf of Asinara was finally identified a portion of the wreck of the Battleship Roma located about 1000 meters deep and about 16 miles off the coast of Sardinia. The first and exclusive pictures of the wreck were taken from Engineer GuidoGay, founder and owner of company  Gaymarine, which since several years leads experiments of the  innovative equipment  for underwater exploration designed and built by him. With the help of the sophisticated underwater robot Pluto Palla, and other exclusive instruments placed on board the catamaran Daedalus owned by the same engineer, the site where the wreck of the battleship Roma was identified and visited.

Il personale della Marina Militare, imbarcato per l’occasione sul Daedalus su invito dell’ingegnere Gay, nostro connazionale, ha verificato la inequivocabile coerenza delle immagini, riprese per la prima volta il giorno 17 giugno2012 e ripetute il 28 giugno 2012, di pezzi di artiglieria contraerea imbarcata sulla corazzata Roma.

The staff of the (Italian) Navy, invited aboard the Daedalus by Mr. Guido Gay, our countryman, has unequivocally verified the consistency of images, taken first on 17 giugno2012 and then again on June 28, 2012, of AA guns installed on the battleship Roma.

Dopo 69 anni dall’affondamento è stato possibile assegnare la corretta posizione a quello che la Marina Militare ritiene uno dei più importanti Sacrari del mare; la Corazzata Roma fu affondata il nove settembre del 1943 da un aereo tedesco e nella quale morirono 1393 marinai, insieme al comandante delle forze navali da battaglia della regia Marina, l’ammiraglio di squadra Carlo Bergamini. Solo 622 furono i sopravvissuti.

After 69 years it is  possible to assign the correct position to what the (Italian) Navy considers one of the most important shrines of the sea: the battleship Roma was sunk on September 9, 1943 by a German plane and 1393 sailors died, together the commander of the naval battle forces of the (Italian) Royal Navy, Admiral Carlo Bergamini.  Only 622 men survived.
